Jack White made history during this year’s Record Store Day by making the world’s fastest released record.
At 10am on 19th April, White took to the stage in The Blue Room of his Third Man Records complex in Nashville. There he recorded a performance directly to acetate, before the recording was taken to the United Record Pressing Plant in Nashville to be made into a limited edition run of singles.
White stayed on stage after the initial recording, playing tracks from the White Strips back catalogue and new songs from his imminent new solo album, Lazaretto. He then left to go and oversee the pressing of the singles.
3 hours, 55 minutes and 21 seconds later, White returned to Third Man to sell the first copy of the 7″ single via a specially constructed stall outside the store.
“I woke up at about 4 in the morning last night, and I thought, ‘Wow. I think there’s about 12 or 13 things that could really go wrong tomorrow,’ he told a press conference. “I just thought how difficult it would be to explain to people if we didn’t pull it off, so thank God we did.”
“When you just go gangbusters and attack something, it just seems to work out. All the molecules line up or something,” he added.
The Blue Room is thought to be the only live venue in the world where artists can record their shows directly to vinyl acetate.
