At the more lighthearted end of the Metallica-verse, Lars Ulrich has accepted a new drum battle challenge from comedian Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
Last month Ferrell and Smith participated in a “drum off” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The battle was sparked when the two made it known that they are constantly mistaken for one another. Ferrell was declared the winner of the contest when he brought out a cowbell and played along with Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper.” The gag was a reference to Ferrell’s “more cowbell” sketch from an episode of Saturday Night Live that aired in 2000.
In interview with Spin, Ferrell recently issued a new challenge to Ulrich: “I mean, we did talk about another drum-off. With a third person that looks eerily similar to Chad and I. A third drummer out there … Lars gets pissed because he gets mistaken for both me and Chad Smith. He can settle that score now, too.”
Ulrich has now responded in a statement issued to Spin: “”I’m sure that with a bit of practice, I could give Chad a run for his money. But Will? That’s a whole different story. He rules the “bad-ass drummer universe.” I mean, you’re talking about a guy who’s so next level, actually, so beyond next level, that he may just be completely unreachable! That said, I’m definitely up for the challenge…Bring it on!!!”
