Louise Distras releases short film ‘Real Outlaw’ exploring the themes of new single ‘Aileen’

Louise Distras 2016

Louise Distras has released a short film, Real Outlaw – A Commentary on Rape Culture and the Riot Grrrl Movement.

The DIY film explores the themes behind Distras’ new single, “Aileen”, released on the 30th of September and her first new music since the release of her debut album, Dreams from the Factory Floor.

Says Distras of the film: “One night after a show I watched the Nick Broomfield documentary Selling of a Serial Killer, which is about a 46 year old lady named Aileen Wuornos, who killed seven men between 1989 and 1990. She was convicted, sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection in 2002. The media dubbed her ‘America’s first female serial killer’ but through much of her life, Aileen maintained that she killed these men in self defense as they raped or attempted to rape and murder her whilst she was working as a prostitute.”

“Whether Aileen was a serial killer or a feminist icon isn’t for me to say,” Distras continues, “but one thing I do know is that as someone who spent their entire life as an outsider and also a survivor, Aileen’s story hit me very hard in a very personal way.

“We live in a world where women are silenced and blamed for being attacked. We live in a world where women are sent to prison for defending themselves against their attackers. We live in a world which simultaneously ignores allegations of rape made against powerful men in the public eye.

“We should not have to live this way, and these men must be held accountable. This culture of normalised violence against women needs to be addressed time and time again until something changes. I feel that in order to do that we need to break the silence and stigma associated with our own experiences to show other survivors that they are not alone.”

Distras concludes: “On my last US tour I was lucky enough to meet two incredible artists and activists who changed my world forever. Vega and Sidney, alongside my producer Steve, inspired me to create Real Outlaw – A Commentary on Rape Culture and the Riot Grrrl Movement. Through sharing our stories we hope to amplify the voices of other survivors and empower people to be creative and start their own revolution. This film is dedicated to one billion women worldwide.”

Louise Distras announces new single ‘Aileen’ and confirms European tour dates

Louise Distras 2016

British firebrand singer-songwriter Louise Distras will release her new single “Aileen” on the 30th of September. The song will be Distras’ first new music since the release of her debut album Dreams from the Factory Floor.

Co-produced by Ross Petersen (Bruce Springsteen, The Vamps, John Mayer) and Dreams from the Factory Floor producer Steve Whale (The Business), “Aileen” represents real musical growth and a sonic shift for Louise, being an impassioned radio anthem that steps away from the punk and protest tags of her past and into powerpop territory. Nevertheless, the pop-friendly hooks house an intense emotional core.

Lyrically “Aileen” is a hard-hitting track that explores the dark story of ‘America’s first female serial killer’ Aileen Wuornos. It’s a song that sees Distras questioning rape culture and the sanctity of life. The song is living proof – if ever it was needed – that pop music does not have to mean ‘dumbed-down’ or ‘throwaway.’

Says Distras of “Aileen”: “One night after a show I watched the Nick Broomfield documentary ‘Selling of a Serial Killer’, which is about ‘America’s first female serial killer’, Aileen Wuornos. As someone who has also experienced homelessness and sexual assault, Aileen’s story hit me pretty hard but left me feeling inspired to share it through my music. The film also left me with my own questions about rape culture and the idea of nature VS nurture, so I decided to make my own DIY film that explores the lyrical content of the single. It’s called ‘Real Outlaw – A Commentary on Rape Culture and the Riot Grrrl Movement’ and it’s available via scanning a QR code that’s printed on the back of the CD and also on tour posters across the UK and mainland Europe.”

“Aileen” and it’s accompanying film will be released worldwide on 30th September 2016 via iTunes and Amazon, or CD and coloured vinyl available exclusively via Louise’s official website. You can pre-order your copy now: louisedistras.co.uk/store
