Kurt Cobain film set to feature previously unreleased songs

Nirvana 1992

The first authorised documentary about Kurt Cobain is set to feature previously unreleased songs by the late Nirvana frontman.

Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck will premiere via HBO on the 4th of May and will get a UK-wide cinema release in the Spring.

Directed by Brett Morgan, Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain has been steering the project in the role of Executive Producer.

As Morgan explains, the film has taken years to research: “I started work on this project eight years ago. Like most people, when I started, I figured there would be limited amounts of fresh material to unearth.

“However, once I stepped into Kurt’s archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects – oil paintings, sculptures – countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media.”

Described as “a raw and visceral journey through his life,” the filmmakers have been given no-holds-barred access to Cobain’s archives which are home to his never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, personal archives and songbooks.

Kurt-Cobain_HD_768x432-16x9

Frances Bean Cobain is working on the first authorised documentary of her late father’s life.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is being produced by HBO and is set to air in 2015. It will be the first documentary to be made with the backing of Cobain’s family.

Frances Bean Cobain will serve as Executive Producer on the project, with Brett Morgan in the Director’s chair. Morgan says that the film will include previoulsy unseen footage from the Cobain family archive:

“I started work on this project eight years ago. Like most people, when I started, I figured there would be limited amounts of fresh material to unearth,” he says.

Earlier this year Courtney Love announced that a biopic of Cobain was in the works, too. Love indicated that she will have a say in who is cast in the movie – a separate project from the HBO film.

Foo Fighters new album artwork revealed?

Foos Crop

Foo Fighters fans have pieced together an image which is thought to be the cover art for the band’s new album.

Following the announcement that the Dave Grohl and co. would reveal some “big news” next Monday 11th August, various sets of co-ordinates were posted online via the Foo Fighters official Twitter account.

At each location a poster could be found which, when pieced together, make a larger image with a figure eight in the centre. The as-yet unnamed album will be Foo Fighters’ eighth album.

The full image contains landmarks from eight US cities: Seattle, Chicago, New York, Hollywood, Washington, D.C., Austin, New Orleans and Nashville. All are cities in which the Foos are known to have recorded when making their new LP.

The new album is due for release in November and will be accompanied by mini series Sonic Highways, which will document the recording progress. Set to air on HBO, Dave Grohl will operate as director for the show following his Sound City documentary of 2013.

Anthrax to record new drum tracks on Game Of Thrones set

Scott Ian Throne Room PicThrash fans partial to a bit of HBO smash hit series Game Of Thrones rejoice! Sort of…

Scott Ian, guitarist with thrash metal legends Anthrax, has revealed that they are planning on recording drums for the band’s new album on the Belfast throne room set of the hit TV show.

Speaking to the Metal Hammer Magazine Show on Team Rock Radio, Ian explained: “I asked Dan Weiss ‘Hey man, what would be the possibility of us recording the drums for the next album in the throne room?’ Like we bring a mobile studio and set up the drums, mic everything and record in here. He says ‘Oh my God that would be the sickest thing ever. We know the guys that can make that possible.’

“All of you out there who watch Game Of Thrones, much like me, probably think it is a very metal TV show. And just know, the reason for that is that one of the creators of it is a huge metalhead.”

Ian has previously indicated that Anthrax will release a new album in 2015.

You can hear the entire interview with the Anthrax axeman on this week’s Metal Hammer Magazine Show at 9pm, on TeamRock Radio starting at 9pm BST.
