Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot starts campaign to fund movie

Joe Elliot, frontman with globe-conquering Sheffield rock band Def Leppard, has begun a crowdfunding campaign to make a movie.

The Bridge will tell the story of a smalltown rock musician who has to decide between life or self destruction. Bobby Field, the man behind award-winning comedy Guy In Row Five, is in the Director’s chair.

As well as Elliot himself, cast and crew include Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago, Twisted Sister’s Eddie Ojeda, Sin Quirin and Al Jourgensen of Ministry and Ricky Warwick of Black Star Riders.

Says Elliot: “I think you should get involved. There are some brilliant people working in front of the camera and behind the camera.”

A wide variety of incentives are available to those who contribute to the campaign, including the opportunity to have Joey Santiago cook you dinner. Some of the funds pledged will also be given to the Fender Music Foundation charity.

“Your contribution is going to mean a lot to keep the integrity of this film and the vision of the artist,” says Santiago.

The Bridge is described as being about “the rise of small town music prodigy, Luke Weaver, who faces the decision to choose life or continue down his steadfast path to self-destruction. Suffocating in small town monotony, and going nowhere fast, Luke watches his hometown band – and life as he knows it – crumble, when his best friend and bandmate decides to moves on.”

Watch! Twisted Sister documentary trailer released

Filmmaker Andrew Horn has released a trailer for his documentary film, We Are Twisted Fucking Sister.

Speaking of the film, director Horn said: “Twisted were the Grand Funk of glam and the New York Dolls of metal – channeling youthful fury and a wicked sense of humour into blue-collar performance art, attracting audiences of up to 2-5000 a night. It was both a great living and a dead end, offering no future outside the suburban enclave.”

“If you think you know them from their hit songs, the MTV videos and massive stadium shows, this is the untold story of how they became that band. It’s about rock’n’roll and the business of rock’n’roll. It’s about perseverance and things blowing up in your face. It’s about finding yourself, finding your audience and doing literally anything, however wild, to connect with them. A mesmerising, story of a 10-year odyssey to overnight success.”

The film was made following a successful IndieGoGo crowdsource campaign in 2013, and Dee Snider, frontman of the band, seems very proud of the documentary. Speaking about its production, he said: “This is independently done, which is the way a documentary of this kind should be. It’s for people who are original fans, hardcore fans, true fans — or want to know more about this band.”

An official release date for the film is yet to be confirmed. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer below:

Metal supergroup launches crowdfunding campaign

Hold the horses! Stop the press! What the hell is all this then?!

A veritable feast of metal music stars, including members of System Of A Down and Fear Factory, have launched one of the most ambitious music-related crowdfunding campaigns ever seen.

Under the band name Project Rogue, the campaign aims to raise $70,000 (£40,000) to create an album called Titans, that will feature performances from Lamb Of God’s Chris Adler, Napalm Death’s Mitch Harris, Cannibal Corpse’s Rob Barrett, alongside Paul Masdival from Cynic.

System Of A Down bass player Shavo Odadjian and Fear Factory’s founding drummer Raymond Herrera are also involved, alongside various established and up-and-coming metal musicians.

Designated Project Rogue leader Herrera says: “Ive been looking into the crowdfunding aspect of the music industry and it’s been pretty interesting to see how people have taken to it. Something like this is very unique because it allows us to deal or work directly with the fans, where they actually invest or be involved in something that is direct with the artist.”

JD Schmidt of Nociceptor adds: “It’s awesome for a band to be able to seek out to a financial resource without having to sign their lives away to a bank to see a project through. And on the other side of the coin it’s great for fans to be a part of the music that they love in whatever way they can.”

“I was floored when they asked me to be a part of it. Deeply humbled and kind of overwhelmed. I think I peed a little bit.”

Odadjian describes crowdfunding as “the future” and says he will offer his bass playing skills as well as writing and arrangement to the songs.

Pat Lachman of Damageplan says he hopes the album will “scare the shit out of people.”

A host of funding options are available for investors, including a digital copy of the album priced at $10 (£6), up to $10,000 (£6,000), a level of contribution which will see your very own composition worked into the music of the album.

GWAR to open bar via Indiegogo campaign

Metal band GWAR have started a crowdsourcing campaign with the aim of raising $50,000 to open a bar.

The band’s Indiegogo campaign page notes that the band hope to “change the dinning [sic] experience in much the same way that Gwar changed the concert-going experience (well, maybe, without quite as much mess).”

At the time of writing, the campaign has raised just over $10,000 of it’s $50,000 target. Incentives listed on the site for potential investors include everything from a free entrée at the bar when it opens (for $100) to a “cooking class with BalSac,” the group’s giant-jawed character (for $750). Two would-be funders so far have claimed personal seats at the bar for $1,000 each so they can “feel like Norm” from Cheers.

The group acknowledge frontman Dave Brockie, who went by the name “Oderus Urungus” and died earlier this year, in their Indiegogo description, saying that his death has made them “more determined than ever” to get the establishment opened. GWAR wants the money to renovate a kitchen they have found so they can serve “gourmet junk food” and a smokehouse to create their own “Gwar-B-Q.” They also want to open a beer garden.
