Jack White’s “Lazaretto” is biggest selling vinyl LP for 20 years

Jack White Lazaretto

Jack White’s sophomore solo album, Lazaretto, has become the biggest selling vinyl LP for 20 years.

Released to critical acclaim in June, the album has gone on to sell 60,000 copies on vinyl, making it not just the biggest selling vinyl album of the year, but the biggest since Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy was released in 1994.

A breakdown of sales figures shows that vinyl copies made up around a quarter of Lazaretto’s total sales, and that 40,000 of those vinyl copies were sold in the album’s first week of release. That also makes it the fastest selling vinyl album since Nielsen started compiling vinyl sales figures in 1991.

Lazaretto was released in an Ultra LP format, side A of which plays as standard, while side B plays from inside to out. There are also two songs that play at 45rpm hidden under the label on each side.

Jack White streams new album ‘Lazaretto’ online

Jack White Lazaretto

Jack White is streaming his forthcoming new album online.

Lazaretto is due for release on the 9th of June via XL Recordings, but you can listen to the whole album now via iTunes Radio here.

A special vinyl ‘Ultra’ version of Lazaretto will also be available. The 180 gram release will feature two vinyl-only hidden tracks, which will be situated under the labels on the record, with one playing at 78 rpm and one at 45 rpm, making the release a three speed album. The mix of the album will also be different from the digital and CD release and have a different running order. In the dead wax of Side A is a hand-etched hologram of an angel by Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science. “This is a really beautiful component to the Ultra LP,” says White.

The standard tracklisting for Lazaretto is as follows:

‘Three Women’
‘Lazaretto’
‘Temporary Ground’
‘Would You Fight For My Love?’
‘High Ball Stepper’
‘Just One Drink’
‘Alone In My Home’
‘Entitlement’
‘That Black Bat Licorice’
‘I Think I Found The Culprit’
‘Want And Able’

White will be playing a one-off show in the UK at London’s Eventim Apollo on the 5th of July.

Jack White reveals ‘Ultra’ vinyl edition of Lazaretto album

Jack White Lazaretto

Jack White has released details of a new ‘Ultra’ vinyl edition of his forthcoming studio album, Lazaretto.

The 180gm vinyl version of the album will feature two hidden tracks situated under the labels on the record, each playing at different speeds, making the album a three-speed affair.

The mix of the album will also be different to the CD and digital editions, and will feature a different running order.

Says White of the release: “While we were mixing the record I started to get ideas about the design of the LP and what we could do differently that hadn’t been done before.” He then demonstrates how Side A of the record plays from the inside out before a locked groove on the outside of the record continually plays.

White explains that his favourite feature of the album is on Side B, where depending on where the needle is dropped, listeners will hear either an acoustic or an electric introduction to the first song. “Both of those intros, acoustic and electric, all come together in the middle of the song and become one groove for the remainder of the song. This is something that’s never been done before,” he says.

In the dead wax of Side A is a hand-etched hologram of an angel by Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science. “This is a really beautiful component to the Ultra LP,” says White.

You can watch the full video of White discussing the record with Ben Blackwell of Third Man Records below. Blackwell says of the album that it “has all kinds of tricks and chicanery hidden inside of it.”

Lazaretto is scheduled for release on the 9th of June.
