Listen! Smashing Pumpkins share new song “Drum + Fife”

Billy Corgan

Smashing Pumpkins have shared another song from new album Monuments To An Elegy.

Smashies mainman Billy Corgan teamed up with Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee for the track “Drum + Fife”, with Corgan claiming that Lee turned the song around:

“Drum + Fife was originally a folk song. We really had a problem getting it off its almost dour Irish balladeer aspect and I must give a lot of credit to Tommy Lee, because he’s the one who turned the corner.

“Without saying it, he was reacting in a way that told me he thought it was a bit boring. Tommy loves energy – Tommy wants to feel excitement. So he’s playing the song and he’s like, ‘I know this is a good song but it’s just not working.’ He said to me, ‘Do you mind if I tinker around with it?’ He got on the computer and used his experience in dance music, turned the corner and found some loops and some beats.”

Corgan will tour Europe on a select run of dates with Rage Against The Machine drummer Brad Wilk and Killers bassist Mark Stoermer completing the live lineup. Their only show in the UK is on the 5th of December at Koko, London.

Tommy Lee says that new Smashing Pumpkins album is like their early records

TLSP Studio Shot

Tommy Lee, currently filling the studio drum spot during recording sessions for the new Smashing Pumpkins album, has said that the new material is like the Pumpkins’ earliest records.

The Mötley Crüe drummer plays on nine songs from the Smashing Pumpkins’ forthcoming new album Monuments To An Elegy, and speaking to Billboard about the record, told fans to expect “epic, goose-bump songs.”

“I think he has probably the best record he’s ever written,” Lee says of front man Billy Corgan’s new material. “These are like epic, goose-bump songs. It sounds like the first couple of Smashing Pumpkins records. I was fucking blown away.”

Last week Corgan announced that he has nearly finished recording one of two new albums that the band will release in 2015. The first, which he says is nearly completed, will be Monuments To An Elegy. The second is likely to be called Day For Night and the band hope to precede both LPs with a new single this year.

Corgan also shared a tentative track listing for Monuments… that is as follows:

‘Being Beige (World’s On Fire)’
‘Anti-Hero’
‘Tiberius’
‘Run To Me’
‘One And All’
‘Drum And Fife’
‘Dorian’
‘Monuments’
‘Anaise’
