Lars Ulrich accepts Will Ferrell’s drum battle challenge

Lars Ulrich - London - 2008

At the more lighthearted end of the Metallica-verse, Lars Ulrich has accepted a new drum battle challenge from comedian Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

Last month Ferrell and Smith participated in a “drum off” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The battle was sparked when the two made it known that they are constantly mistaken for one another. Ferrell was declared the winner of the contest when he brought out a cowbell and played along with Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper.” The gag was a reference to Ferrell’s “more cowbell” sketch from an episode of Saturday Night Live that aired in 2000.

In interview with Spin, Ferrell recently issued a new challenge to Ulrich: “I mean, we did talk about another drum-off. With a third person that looks eerily similar to Chad and I. A third drummer out there … Lars gets pissed because he gets mistaken for both me and Chad Smith. He can settle that score now, too.”

Ulrich has now responded in a statement issued to Spin: “”I’m sure that with a bit of practice, I could give Chad a run for his money. But Will? That’s a whole different story. He rules the “bad-ass drummer universe.” I mean, you’re talking about a guy who’s so next level, actually, so beyond next level, that he may just be completely unreachable! That said, I’m definitely up for the challenge…Bring it on!!!”

Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith face off in charity drum battle

Ferrell Smith Fallon

Well, it finally happened.

Actor and comedian Will Ferrell, and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, held their long awaited drum battle live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (22nd May.)

The uncanny likeness of the two men was first highlighted by Ferrell in a Reddit Ask Me Anything event, resulting in Smith issuing the drum battle challenge.

Ferrell accepted the challenge during another Reddit AMA, writing: “Hi, Chad. Will Ferrell here. I saw your video and I graciously accept your invitation to a drum battle. If we can raise $300,000 (£182,000) for Cancer For College I will face off with you in the greatest drum vs. cowbell showdown the world has ever seen. We can do it on stage at a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert or in front of a mutually convenient public library. Your call. Also, would you rather fight a hundred duck sized ducks or one horse sized horse?”. The money was raised via an online fundraiser.

The pair dressed identically in jeans and Kiss T-shirts for the occasion, highlighting how similar they look. After four rounds and a surprise appearance by Smith’s Red Hot Chili Peppers band mates, Ferrell was declared the winner after producing a cow bell and playing along to Blue Oyster Cult’s classic “Don’t Fear The Reaper.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Smith had previously commented: “I’m all for it. But unless Will’s been practicing or is secretly a crazy, wild drummer, I think it’ll be evident right off the bat who the real Chad Smith is. I’m ready to take him down.” Ferrell added: “I have not been practicing. There’s no amount of practice that would help me become a good drummer.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers working on new album

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Red Hot Chili Peppers have revealed that they have started work on their next album.

Speaking with Billboard, drummer Chad Smith said: “”It’s only been a couple of months, so we’re just starting to write and get in the groove of things. This is my favourite time, being creative, coming up with ideas. You go there at 11 o’clock with something that wasn’t a piece of music, everyone collaborates on something, three hours later you’ve got something that’s a piece of music that wasn’t there before.”

Smith said that it was too early to talk about the sound of the album, but added: “We’re always trying to change and grow and do new stuff. So we don’t make the record that we made three years ago, we’re gonna make something different. And you never know what that is going to be.”

Last month, it was announced that Smith’s bandmate Flea would be releasing an album with his new band Antemasque, which also features Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López of The Mars Volta. Their self-titled debut will be released in July.

Smith and superstar comedian Will Ferrell – who some say is Smith’s doppelganger – are also set to appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on the 22nd of May, participating in a drum battle.

“We’re going to have a drum-off to see who the real Chad Smith is,” the real Chad Smith told Rolling Stone. “I’m all for it. But unless Will’s been practicing or is secretly a crazy, wild drummer, I think it’ll be evident right off the bat who the real Chad Smith is. I’m ready to take him down.”

Antemasque supergroup to release debut album

antemasqueAntemasque, the new band featuring Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López from The Mars Volta and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, have announced they will release their debut LP this summer.

The band have shared a number of songs over the past few weeks, including ‘People Forget’, ‘4AM’ and ‘Hangin’ In The Lurch’, all of which are set to appear on the album when it is released on 15th July.

A statement issued by the band noted: “If the whole thing looked unplanned, that’s because it was. The anticipation of what the reaction from fans and critics would be was very real for us with every new song we put out.”

‘People Forget’, ‘4AM’ and ‘Hangin’ In The Lurch’ are all available to download now via Rodríguez-López’s label, Nadie Sound. The first 10,000 orders will receive ‘Drown All Your Witches’ as a free download.
