The Winery Dogs share cover version of David Bowie’s ‘Moonage Daydream’

The Winery Dogs 2015

The Winery Dogs have shared a cover version of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream.”

The song was being held by the band for use as bonus material on a future release, but they decided to issue it to honour Bowie following his death this week from cancer at the age of 69.

Says Winery Dogs drummer Mike Portnoy: “Just thinking of all the ways David Bowie’s music affected my life for the past 45 years when I began listening to him. I loved the song ‘Memory Of A Free Festival’ when my dad introduced me to it when it was released. I was about three years old.

The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars to this day is still in my top five albums of all time. An absolute masterpiece from the opening of ‘Five Years’ to the closing of ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide’.

“I don’t think many people ever caught this, but look at the shirt I am wearing on the cover of The Winery Dogs’ first album. Yep, Ziggy Stardust is right there with me, Billy Sheehan and Richie Kotzen. And one of the unreleased covers we recorded during that first session was ‘Moonage Daydream’.

“Thank you, David Bowie, for being a part of my entire life. Your music and memory will live with me and millions of your fans forever.”

The Winery Dogs reveal video for new single “Oblivion”

The Winery Dogs 2015

The Winery Dogs – the supergroup featuring Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy – have released a mind-melting video for their equally mesmerising new single, “Oblivion.” You can watch it below.

Originally premiering via Classic Rock, the track is lifted from the ‘Dogs new album, Hot Streak, scheduled for release via earMUSIC on the 30th of October.

“We elevated the band to the next level,” says vocalist/guitarist Kotzen. “I wasn’t nervous about it at all. There’s always that worry with a followup record when you have a first one that’s so well received, but I believed in it from day one. I knew in my heart if we made a record that wasn’t as good as the first one that we wouldn’t release it, but I know I did my best on every song. I also like the fact that there’s a commonality between the first and second records — and there’s also an evolution too, as we’ve dug a little deeper.”

“The mission of this band is to write catchy songs, and not have the musicianship overpower them,” adds drummer Portnoy. “That’s the icing on the cake — but the cake itself is always the song and the vocals. Every song on this album is memorable and catchy, and you’ll wake up whistling them all the next day.”

The Winery Dogs are currently on tour in the US with more dates expected in 2016. You can watch the video for “Oblivion” below.

Winery Dogs to start recording new album in the spring

Winery Dogs

The Winery Dogs mainman Richie Kotzen has said that the band will head in to the studio in May to start recording their new album.

Speaking to VintageRock.com Kotzen revealed that he, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Mike Portnoy have been working on new material that he says is both “crazy” and “cool”.

“We actually started writing music a couple of weeks ago at my house and got a bunch of ideas,” says the singer and guitarist. “I think it’s going to be a cool record. We’ve got a couple of songs that we did at the piano, some acoustic things, crazy stuff and it’s going to be a fun record.

“We’ll probably start recording it in May and, realistically, it will be out at the end of summer.”

Last month drummer Mike Portnoy said that the band were eyeing up a world tour to coincide with the new release.
